The Society of Professional Journalists student chapter at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa is an organization that strives to protect the public's right-to-know, to improve cultural diversity in newsrooms and to provide learning opportunities for students.
In the past, the chapter has made significant impacts on the community, including winning a legal battle with the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO). Student members successfully challenged SHOPO to disclose the names of officers disciplined for misbehavior in the late 1990s.
This year we will work to reopen Campus Security logs at UHM, which were closed to the public last spring. The logs document actions taken by individual Campus Security officers.
